Physiognomy

Physiognomy is the study of human nature through the facial features of a person. It is said that our face is the index of our mind. Whatever transpires in our mind is reflected through our facial expressions including eyes, cheeks, forehead, chin, teeth and lips. In course of time, our face acquires a kind of expression or appearance that represents our true or typical nature.

We hear quite often that such and such person has a pleasant, attractive, reassuring, confident or repulsive and fearful face. The truth behind these statements is that the facial features represent the personal traits, nature or character of the individual. The face of a child, particularly his eyes indicate the innocence of his mind. The same face acquires different, sometimes awful expression, in the later part of his life indicating a fundamental change in his nature. We often find that the facial features of murderers and the executioners are very harsh and fearful.
